What to Prepare Before Your First Specialist Appointment

Records, referrals, and the details a specialist usually asks for first.

Bring your referral letter and medical history

If you were referred by a general practitioner or community health center, bring the original referral letter and a copy. If you've had related tests before — lab results, X-rays, or notes from a previous doctor — bring those too. This helps the specialist understand your condition faster without repeating the same tests.

Prepare your ID and insurance documents

Bring your ID card, insurance or BPJS card, and policy number if you have one. For some insurance schemes, you may need a guarantee letter or pre-authorization before certain procedures — checking this with your insurer or the hospital beforehand can save you time on the day of your visit.

Write down your symptoms as clearly as you can

Before your appointment, try noting: when your symptoms started, how often they occur, what makes them better or worse, and any medications you've already taken. A simple note like this helps the doctor get an accurate picture, rather than relying on memory in the moment.

Prepare the questions you want to ask

Consultation time often feels short. Writing down your questions beforehand — about diagnosis, treatment options, medication side effects, or next steps — helps make sure everything important gets covered before the session ends.
